Artist Statement: Fine Art Superheroes

Through my work I seek to animate values that are critical to the creative process. I explore these values through wearable-performative characters, created through costume, photography, and collaborations with dancers. I create all my characters using a cotton unitard and fabric paint, and various materials for the headpieces. I call my characters ‘Fine Art Superheroes’ because our archetypal comic-book heroes always have a a definitive value which shapes their appearance and conduct. For me, each hero’s ‘suit’ employs motif from a fine art movement that comes to signify that character’s identity, and all my works represent epic characters who embody an ideal, such as creativity, synchronicity, transformation, or protest.
